Cancellation Message – Ecostravaganza 2012
Ecostravaganza is a vibrant and exciting community event that inspires Cowichan Valley families to make green changes in their everyday lives, generates a large amount of revenue to provide an enhanced learning environment for Ecole Mill Bay students and is a proud brand for our school. In each of the past two years, Ecostravaganza has raised approximately $12,000 towards our average PAC budget of $45,000 annually, as well as providing $1,000 donations to non-profit groups such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Providence Farm and the Cowichan Valley Young Naturalists. With an average of 2,000 people in attendance, the event requires a tremendous amount of volunteer support in terms of year- round planning, and set-up, organization and clean-up closer to the day of the event.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of interested parents willing to participate in leadership and coordination roles for Ecostravaganza 2012, the Ecostravaganza Planning Committee decided at its March 30/12 meeting that it had no other choice but to cancel this year’s event because it felt that the exceptional quality of this event will be compromised. While the rehabilitation of our school playing field and the continued uncertainty of the teachers’ job action also plays a role in this decision, the importance of having enough volunteers to run this event must be emphasized. Current Planning Committee members are willing to participate in organizing Ecostravaganza 2013; however, additional leadership and organizing support is required, with volunteer coordinators providing back-up for each other to ensure that coordinating each unique area of Ecostravaganza is a manageable task for everyone involved. We need to know that our school community will be there to support Ecostravaganza prior to, on and after event day, before making the commitment to proceed with this event next year.
